Since vectors have both direction and magnitude to consider, they have to be added up in particular ways. One of the first and easiest ways is to add/subtract vectors graphically.

2 Direction Vectors
However simple arithmetic only works for vectors moving on a single line or dimension. If it is two dimension (For example a person walking north and the other person walking east), the displacement and angle would have to both be taken into consideration in the calculations in order to resolve to a precise northeast direction and magnitude. And this involves the use of the Pythagorean theorem. Yet, this could also be resolved graphical
